How can you use Halloween to talk about your business?

Halloween can be a great ‘moment’ to talk about, many things which will have a timely and topical feel. It can be a great excuse to use all that it might mean to share stories, opinions in blogs, social media posts and occasionally in a media story.
If you have products that fit in with this time of year, then you can talk about it easily, as
you probably can if you are spiritually minded. For the former, if you sell Halloween related products you’ve probably already been talking about it for weeks and now it’s all the last minutes sales. If you are spiritual you may want to talk about the other meanings around Halloween. For example, it’s also known as Samhain or All Hallow’s Eve.
However, if your business doesn’t automatically speak of Halloween to you – how can you use words associated with Halloween and emotions, to talk about you or your business?
You might want to share information about how you feel about Halloween and if you celebrate it – or not. Or you may make a big deal of it – as in America where it’s very big news.
How could you create fun / interesting titles for blogs or posts at this time – almost giving you permission to talk about your business, yourself and your expertise? Why not consider just ten words which are linked to Halloween:
- Scary: What’s scary about what you do? What scary problems can you solve for your customers? For example – what’s scary about HR? There are definitely aspects of HR that all businesses find scary. Will they say the wrong thing? Will they be seen in a different light? Are we making perceptions we shouldn’t?
- Tortuous:what tasks can you do for clients which they might find tortuous? Why is doing your book keeping so tortuous? Doing our books and keeping our finances up to date is something many of us hate, so we put it off. That means when we do get around to working on finances, it can be a tortuous activity.
- Death: Why is it morbid to talk about death? We all need to plan for the loved ones we leave behind. If we own a business, it’s even more important we plan for what happens after our death, as you don’t want loved ones to be left having to deal with stuff, at a time when they will be grieving. Death is relevant to us all so you may want to use this moment to talk about it and how you can bring peace of mind to others, if that’s relevant to your business.
- Gruesome: What do you find gruesome? What are the most gruesome films you’ve watched or books you’ve read? Or you could apply that word to your business. For example – what’s gruesome about cleaning? The thought of cleaning up after other people, especially if they are not our family, can be a horrible thought. For many, having to deal with a stranger’s dirt or untidiness can seem completely unwholesome, and gruesome.
- Evil; Is it evil to enjoy looking for mistakes? Perhaps your company works with people in their customer service, or you help people to recognise the mistakes they’re making in their business. Or you could use this word to share an opinion on something or share an experience of ‘evil’.
- Ghosts; can you share a ghost story or apply this word to your business or expertise. An example might be ‘ghosting’ someone in the world of dating or business.
- Horror: Horrifying tales of personal experiences or horrific moments you are happy to share. Could this be relevant to your business or expertise? What about health and safety? Health and Safety professionals are there to make sure companies don’t have horrifying tales, but have plenty to tell, where people haven’t thought about the safety of their staff and clients.Haunting memory of… something incredible, either good or bad that happened in your business or life and has stayed with you. Or the memory of a person, who is no longer alive, but impacted on your reason for starting a business. You could even share the way you’ve done something wrong/made a mistake that haunts you. Or has anyone ever apologised to you for something they did which has haunted them?
- Inexplicable: What things can you not explain – what things are like black magic to you? or to your customers? An example might be SEO? SEO to many of us appears like some dark art, in fact something wicked and evil that only a few IT people understand…
- Possessed: The word possessed can mean: influenced or controlled by something ie a passion or an idea, or, you are mad or crazed. Many businesses start because someone has a passion for an idea, or a product or a service they want to offer. And often they become possessed about getting that idea out there in front of other people. Or it could be that you were the victim of some treatment unexpectedly out of the blue which was out of character…what was the explanation. For example, it’s very common in business that people dispense with your services out of the blue and they tell you it’s for reason A but that makes no sense. You later find out that the reason was something else entirely.
Hopefully these words associated with Halloween might give you some ideas to write about your business in a more creative way.
Also, at the end of this month, our clocks go back. Does this affect your business?
It doesn’t affect mine, apart from the fact that both morning and evenings become darker, which I don’t enjoy that much. Especially when I take our dog for a walk each morning. However it’s a perfect opportunity to talk about ‘time’ and many of us can apply that to our businesses.
