NEW YEAR, NEWSWORTHY STORIES

Posted on January 5, 2026 by Categories: Business Tags: , , ,

As we are settling back into our day-today routines, the celebrations of new year are dissipating and work is kicking in again, many people are not thinking about social media and your stories. You’re probably thinking about your yearly goals in sales or product launches etc…

But your social media and story goals for 2026 should be at the top of your mind this January. The more planning you put into the start of the year, the easier it is to hit your goals. Working towards writing and telling interesting stories that will grab attention from your audience, the more you will achieve them.

Here are ten major events that could come up in 2026 which might create a good story for you.

  1. Valentine’s Day.

If you have a product or service releasing a Valentine’s Day special, this is the time to share it! Is there a love story at the heart of your business or your expertise? Can you interest people with stories of love that would interest them?

  1. The Winter Olympics in February and The Winter Paralympics in March.

A massive competition happening at the start of 2026 is the Winter Olympics. This allows for great stories of athletes overcoming obstacles (sometimes literally) and sharing their tales of triumph. Big cultural events are fantastic to watch for your businesses, because you can connect and comment on trends and cultural moments people will be discussing. You need to get involved in the stories others are telling!

  1. Easter!

Whether you discuss Easter in a religious, spring or creative context, this time of year is perfect for you to create stories mid-year. Linking your stories to easter will support your visibility and story’s prominence. Please remember, Easter falls early this year on the 5th April!

  1. London Marathon (April)

The London Marathon dominates stories throughout England as people share their stories of triumph and raising money for charities up and down the country. If you are running or training for the London Marathon, this is an opportunity to get eyes on you and your business.

  1. The Football World Cup (Summer 2026)

Already, the 2026 World Cup has been in the headlines already! The extortionate ticket prices for the final have been littering the news throughout the new year. This cultural event will have a magnifying glass on it! If you are a football fan, and you’re celebrating in your business, Summer 2026 is the opportunity to tell a story about it.

  1. Do you have a milestone birthday this year?

If you or your business has a milestone birthday to celebrate, such as 5 years in business or 15 years of being an award-winning provider, you need to celebrate that by telling your story. A milestone date would be if the number of years is divisible by fives (e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20).

  1. Christmas in July.

Believed to have originated in North America, Christmas in July (typically, 5th July) allows for a second Christmas celebration in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it allows people to celebrate Christmas during a winter climate, allowing for them to have a ‘White Christmas’, if snow decides to fall.

  1. Commonwealth Games 2026

For those of you travelling or based in Glasgow around the Commonwealth Games, this is your chance to discuss it. Whether it be the stories of the athletes, your experience of the games, your sponsorship or your comments on a ‘viral’ moment, you need to get writing.

  1. Pride Celebrations!

Summer or late spring welcomes Pride parades and celebrations across the country! In many towns celebrating the pride and inclusivity of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a great opportunity to share the work you are doing around inclusivity, representation, and charity work associated with supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community.

  1. Festivals Galore.

Whether it be Reading, Hay-On-Wye, or Cheltenham, there are festivals taking place up and down the UK celebrating music, literature, sport and businesses. If you are attending as a guest or as someone bringing your expertise, this is the perfect opportunity to shout about it. Engage with people who are passionate about these topics and find an audience you might not have tapped into yet.
