Meet Kate Rowland:
Based in Wiltshire, Kate joined Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service as their Training Manager in 2021 after 10 years working in safeguarding with families in Wiltshire. The charity has supported victims of DA for 50 years, but they want to reach more victims and prevent DA from happening in the first place.
A large part of Kate’s work involves highlighting to businesses how prevalent DA is and that it will inevitably impact their staff at some point. This then has a huge impact on employee well-being, productivity, retention etc. She wants businesses to commit to having DA policies in place and ensuring that key individuals, such as managers/HR Officers/MHFA teams etc, have DA on their radar and know how to recognise and support victims and survivors.
In the past she has worked with companies as large as Zurich, Network Rail and Nationwide on this, but have also worked with much smaller organisations. Recently Zurich have been recognised for their DA policy by a national business award – a policy which Kate helped them to develop.
She has also delivered training to Wiltshire Police as part of the DA Matters initiative across the Wiltshire Constabulary.
Kate was also a speaker at a conference at Bowood on violence against women and girls, on International Women’s’ Day, and has also spoken at NHS and military conferences.
She also manages the charity’s Ambassador programme, which is for anyone who is interested in supporting the charity, but who also would like to be a point of contact within their community, to offer support and signposting to anyone experiencing DA.
Her speaking topics are:
· Domestic abuse awareness
· A community approach on tackling domestic abuse
· The impact of domestic abuse on individuals in the workplace
· Employers’ roles and responsibilities
· The impact of domestic abuse on children and young people
· Domestic abuse and mental health challenges
· Survivors stories
