One Year Anniversary of Lauren working for Scott Media
It’s a whole year since my stepdaughter, Lauren, joined me in my business, so we’re celebrating!
Having her join me has been wonderful and a steep learning curve for us both. You don’t realise how much you know until you are trying to impart that knowledge to someone else!
Yet Lauren has already made a lot of new connections and created content for the business on a weekly basis. Turnover has increased so the investment of time, money and passion has already started to reap benefits.
10 things Lauren has learned working with me in Scott Media over the past 12 months
In her words…
- The media world moves incredibly fast. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s how important it is to stay on my toes and adapt quickly. It can feel a bit intense sometimes, but at the same time, that makes it exciting.
- PR isn’t just about getting a headline or shouting the loudest. More importantly it’s about telling a story that actually connects with people. I’ve learned how powerful it is to craft something authentic that resonates.
- Relationships are everything. Whether it’s with journalists, clients, or our own team- building genuine connections is what makes things work. It’s certainly not just about strategies or plans on paper.
- Working with family has been such a good experience for me. Fiona (my step-mum) has been an incredible mentor, and I’ve learned so much from her already and have so much more to learn. Plus, I feel there’s an extra layer of trust and comfort when you’re working alongside someone you know so well.
- Work-life balance since becoming a mum is a constant juggling act! Some days I feel like I’ve got it all together, and other days… well, not so much. But I’ve realised that is okay. Fiona has been there and built her business in the process. She understands the struggles, and I am so grateful for that.
- Working part-time doesn’t mean I’m less committed. If anything, I’ve learned to make my hours count, and focus on what really matters. It’s all about working smarter and showing that results speak louder than clocked hours.
- Flexibility at work has been an absolute lifesaver. Being able to tweak my schedule when I needed, (hello, toddler sickness bugs and childcare chaos!) has helped me stay sane and even more productive. It’s honestly made all the difference.
- I don’t need to be perfect to do a good job. One big thing I’ve learned is that I can’t get everything right all the time – I’m still learning. Mistakes happen, and they’re often where the best lessons come from. It’s more about learning and improving than being faultless.
- Creativity thrives when there’s pressure – at least for me. I’ve found that those last-minute deadlines or tricky challenges can actually spark some of my best writing.
- Wins deserve to be celebrated, whether they’re big or small. Especially when we are a small team, and no-one is going to praise our good work unless we do it ourselves.
Having Lauren working with me impacts in the following ways:
*I hadn’t realised this, but you don’t know how much you know until you are trying to teach someone else – it’s hard work.
*When you’re working with family members you have to set parameters. There has to be separation between work and family for you to be able to function as a business successfully. It requires a high degree of honesty and being upfront. Luckily, we have always done that in our personal lives, so it feels normal for us.
*Towards the end of the year when things are hectic, it was a huge feeling of relief that I had help.
*The fact my turnover went up by about 23 per cent and the business had a steady profit. Win, win!
