There’s more to October than Halloween
The main celebration of this month for many people is Halloween which is definitely not something I celebrate. Instead, I thought I’d share other things you could be celebrating.
What else can you celebrate in October?
Birthdays and Anniversaries
In our household we celebrate a lot of family birthdays’ and anniversaries. It was my parents wedding anniversary on the 13th – a day most people consider troublesome due to superstitions – however it didn’t bother my parents.
Our daughter Sammie has her birthday on the 14th and it would have been my dad’s on the 16th. Two of our friends also have birthdays – Phil on the 12th – the husband of my friend Ainslie who died of cancer, whose charity I support every year. And my besties husband, Conrad on the 28th.
I love crystals and you might be interested to know, the birthstone for October is Opal. Its name is believed to have originated in India (the source of the first opals brought to the Western world).
Ancient Greeks thought opals bestowed the gift of prophecy and protection from disease and Europeans believed opal to be a symbol of purity, hope and truth.
Opal is also the stone given to celebrate the 14th wedding anniversary.
Films being released in the UK in October:
There are a few films being released, but the most iconic is “Ghost” which is being re-released with special screenings around the UK in 4K to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the classic film, released in 1990. So if you’re a fan of this film check out if it’s going to be shown near you.
The changing season
While many people miss the sun and brightness of summer, others’ celebrate the change of season as we move into Autumn. Nights draw in and houses are lit with the warmth of sparkling lights (even before Christmas). It’s an excuse to decorate your house or office with warm colours; wreaths of green, oranges and reds, and pumpkins – they don’t just have to mean Halloween. For far longer in history, they’ve been a traditional harvest decoration.
Businesses celebrating the season
Halloween may well be a time that resonates with your business. If it is something you celebrate, you’ll already have things planned.
You may have a business anniversary this month; two of my clients and friends are celebrating their 10th business anniversary this month.
This is also a good time to be planning ahead for winter and beyond. Getting some autumnal-styled photos for your business that you can use in the following months.
Share images on your social media of your office if you decorate it or do anything specific for this time of the year. Maybe you have an Autumn sale.
Be prepared to newsjack stories, when journalists are looking for Autumnal media stories. Having those photos ready will be important.
An example of how you can embrace the season: one of my clients has opened a shop – Something Kind of Woo – where she sells crystals, incense and pure essential oils. She also runs Reiki, chakra balancing and crystal know-how sessions. She is celebrating the Harvest Full Moon on October 7th by organising a ceremony to celebrate the new moon and all it brings – with Cacao. Cacao is pure, unprocessed chocolate. It was revered by ancient cultures and known as the ‘food of the gods’. She has completely embraced a great way to celebrate the month.

Also, October is National Book Month. I have a huge ‘to be read’ pile by my bed, and as those of you who know me well know, I love reading. However, I’m also excited because this month I’m publishing my second book – which you can read more about in my next blog!
