WHAT’S YOUR STORY IN APRIL?
There’s a kind of optimism woven into April, or I always feel that – I suppose because for me, it’s almost a new year as my birthday is at the end of March so there’s natural personal reflection.
‘Out with the old, in with the new, goodbye clouds of grey, hello skies of blue’ etc’ as various sayings go.
For me, April means soft light begins stretching into longer evenings and the first real warmth of the sun starts to arrive. April serves as a reminder that growth often happens naturally, and new beginnings are always within reach. This sentiment can be applied to all areas of life, and, of course, business.
As April approaches, this is the perfect time to start thinking about what makes this month special and how you can use it as an opportunity to be more visible – whether that’s via a press release, a social media post or posts, a video/videos, blog or blogs….or a combination.
April kicks off with April Fool’s Day so you can use this as an early theme this month for a bit of fun or a ‘listicle’ around myths/nonsense about what you do however do be aware of treating people unkindly and not naming names (there’s a libel law which could become relevant). It’s also Easter this month (April 3 to 6) and National Pet Month, both of which leave plenty of options for you to share your personality in your business if it’s relevant.
Take photos and share them on social media! Remember, engagement brings attention to your profile. Our recent Enlightening Retreats escape focusing on visibility and TikTok included making use of natural scenery. Take pictures of things people enjoy looking at. Flowers, the sunset, animals, a pretty sky. These images can be used later and are great for starting conversations. Remember, people buy from people so express your opinions and engage.
Show your audience who you are. It’s also important to note that April is the end of the tax year, so money in business is a big theme this month for every business but particularly if your business offers financial services for people or other businesses (or both).
The aim is always to start planning stories based around your own business first. For example, have you or anyone in your team won an award this month? Is there an anniversary in your business? Are you running an event? Are you raising money for charity? Are there any changes in your business happening? Eg, moving office, a new product/new accreditation that you celebrate?
If you are struggling for ideas then here are some hooks to get you started:
1st – April Fool’s Day – can you talk about this, don’t be afraid to embrace humour.
2nd – International Children’s book day – what book did you enjoy as a child?
3rd – Find a rainbow day – finding the positive in a day or in a situation?
5th – End of UK tax year/Easter Sunday – is this your extra busy time/makes you groan/makes you reflect?
7th – No housework day – great for domestic cleaning companies to make some noise.
10th – International Day of Pink – do you love or hate pink? Is it in your logo colours? Embrace it or not….
10th – Siblings day – so you have siblings? Are you close to them? Share positive stories if relevant and appropriate.
14th – Look up at the sky day – how many of us forget to look ‘up’. Could also talk about stars, moon, sun and the joy of dark skies?
15th – World Art Day – what is your favourite art? Are you an artist? Celebrate local artists to you….
17th – International Haiku poetry day – have a go at poetry? Looks easy doesn’t it? It’s not unless you are a poet.
23rd – Shakespeare Day – the man behind some of the great leaps in the English language and one of the world’s most successful writers.
30th – Denim Day/International Guide Dog Day – two very different days but there’s something for everyone when it comes to awareness days.
Or what about awareness month themes for April:
1) Stress Awareness
2) World Autism Awareness
3) National Pet Month
4) Step Up for 30 for Bowel Cancer UK
5) Bake A Difference 2025 (for dementia)
6) IBS Awareness Month
7) Parkinsons Awareness
8) Rosacea Awareness Month
Think about how you personally and professionally engage with these dates and events. Don’t focus on what you think is rubbish or irrelevant. There’s an audience for everything – even watching paint dry.
Make sure to tell your story your way and if these ideas help you then we’ve done our job.
Whatever you choose to do, write about it, think of how it can be used across your social media, blogs on websites and even the local, sector led media. This is the perfect opportunity for PR to reflect your business positively.
Remember some of these things can amount to more than one story. For example, if you are raising money for charity, start with what you are doing and why, record and document the event etc and then share how much you raised in total and what you will do with it. The aim is to accumulate content for more than one story.
*One little caveat, do double check specific dates as they can change from year to year.
